BLUE short poem in Genghis Lotus Poetry Collection, a selection of poems free to read online. Webmaster for this site is poet Hugh Cook, born in Britain, educated in New Zealand, and the author of, amongst other works, the fantasy series Chronicles of an Age of Darkness.
BLUE is a poem written in the aftermath of eyesight damage caused by radiotherapy. With my trashed vision, I can see well enough to read, write and use a computer, but my color perception is impaired. In particular, I have trouble differentiating blue from green. Though I do see, up to a point, what I see is tinged with gray, a grayness into which gray things such as concrete utility poles tend to merge, effectively becoming invisible. And, while I can see, the world that I perceive is like looking through a pool of muddy water. And the water is constantly in motion. I am not yet reconciled to the fact that I will never again see the world that I remember, but this is a truth which, like it or not, I have no option but to live with. |

There was a sky, I remember. There was a sea. There was turquoise and there was lapiz lazuli In the markets of Nepal. There was the actual blue Of the living light of the rainbow. I remember, writing this, now, Writing with the aid of the silent gray, The gibbering gray soup which serves me as my eyesight now. |
