A MANTRA

This is the meditation of steel,
Mahatma, Bodhivsattra —
My fingers slick the oil
Over breech-block and gas plug.

This is the meditation of light.
Mahatma, Bodhivsattra —
The sun ranges down the hill
To the butts and the sea.

This is the meditation of breath.
Mahatma, Bodhivsattra —
My fingers slick the sun
Over barrel and sight.

This is the meditation of power.
Mahatma, Bodhivsattra —
The butt in the shoulder
Slams acceleration to the bone.

This is the meditation of consequence.
Mahatma, Bodhivsattra —
The brass sheers to the sun,
The bullet sheers to the sky.
Mahatma, Bodhivsattra.
Bodhivsattra, Mahatma.
