Analyze Poetry - Tips

1. Read the poem. Hide the poem. On a piece of scrap paper, write down what sticks in your mind. What are the key points?

2. Read the poem aloud. Poets often (not always, but often) write with a speaking voice in mind. Reading the poem aloud is one way of familiarizing yourself with it.

3. Compare the poem at hand with some other poem that you know well. Is it shorter, longer, similar, different? (If you don't know any poems well, try memorizing a few.)

4. Rewrite the poem as prose.

Only four techniques, but if you're really stuck they should get you started.

introducing poet Hugh Cook - his poetry and his aesthetic

Mozart the Fish

She's standing at the counter, fairly serious,
Lips pursed, filling in a form -
A minion of the quotidian,
A functionary of the realms of order,
The output of the input of the timeclock.

She is pregnant.

In a world without clocks
Something which is not yet someone
Is swimming.
Five centimeters -
Mozart the Fish, evolution's astronaut,
