        "This could get someone killed," said Mugwump.
        This was in the morning, before we set forth from our lodging house, before we made our way forth to encounter destiny in the form of the bell.
        What had caught Mugwump's attention was the steep stairway leading down from the upper floor of the lodging house. It had no bannister.
        "This could easily get someone killed," said Mugwump, his mind coming alive, instantly, with visions of murder.

What's the technique here? Well, first you were promised that you would find out about the bell. That led you to turn to the next chapter. However, if the next chapter immediately told you THE DREADED SECRET OF THE BELL, then that would kill the suspense. Immediately. You could easily close the book. The technique, then, is the leapfrog technique: establish one promise, and then, before making good on it, establish a second promise. Never end up in a situation in which all your promises have been resolved. Not until you are ready to write "the end".

         Would anyone ultimately die in a tragic fall down the stairs of doom? That was a question still left unresolved when we departed our lodging house. No doubt we would find out, in due course.
         Meantime, the bell ....

         The location is the park, as I have explained, and I am in the process of discovering the source of the mystery bell tones.
         I walk up to the restroom and see that the bell-like sound seems to be coming from a metal plate. The metal is dull beneath the clouded sky, and, lo! - visible upon its surface, there are markings in a language which I am incapable of decryting.
         If this was fantasy story, the bell and the metal plate would be part of some logically cohesive but patently impossible method of operating upon reality.
