How to Write Fiction

Notes by Hugh Cook

how to write fiction

introduction

This how-to-write project includes a rundown of what's in this project plus news about what's new in this project. The project is the brainchild of Hugh Cook who is a writer with many short fiction credits and a respectable list of full-length novel credits. He has somefree fiction ready to read now on the web - SF, horror, fantasy and some mainstream. Complete stories, of course. Also, for adults only, a couple of full-length novels ready to read now (fantasy, military SF). He can be contacted by e-mail.

How to Get Started

Start with the practical stuff (check it out!) then look at a review of plot basics in the form of a short story template. Where do I start? And what do I do if I get stuck? The file about boy meets girl should help answer both those questions. For some brief thoughts on characters take a look at a file about characters and for more detail try introducing and reintroducing characters.

I Can't Write!

Hugh says, "Neither can I, at times." There are no perfect recipes, but take a look at the nuts and bolts of creative writing, the planet and the shoe thought experiment and the piece on writer's block.

Let's Analyze Some Texts

Tearing the legs off flies won't necessarily help you build your own fly, but let's give it a shot anyway. We start with a piece on writing the opening - writing the opening paragraph. (Hugh says, "And that's where we finish, because there are only 24 hours in a day, and I'm already busy for 25 of them.") (More should follow in this course. Watch this space.)

Show Me Some Advanced Stuff

Hugh says, "Personally, I always get the most benefit by going back to basics." However. Take a look at tensioning-elements. (Not advanced enough? Too advanced? Well, how hot is hot curry?)

Files Without A Category

"Files in Search of a Category" - a drama coming to the big screen soon. (Or, then again, maybe not.) There is a piece on computers and creativity and there is the inevitable page of links (after all, the Internet wouldn't be a net without them) - in this case selected how to write links.
